Taming of the Shrew was the first of two shows being done as part of the Long Beach Shakespeare Company’s summer outdoor Shakespeare Festival (followed later in the summer by Antony & Cleopatra). I had an extremely short time to put this show together, as in a couple of days, so the plan was quality yet efficient. I decided for this show that I wanted it to be a stage (...what? you say...); I did not want it to be a specific location in the show, or a representation that became each location - I really wanted to utilize the fact that it was a two story Shakespearian stage. So, the main change was a full paint treatment making the whole thing wood-like, I opted for colored curtains instead of black so they were part of the stage effect and not “invisible” theatrical curtaining, and then there was greenery dressing which just livened up the whole thing. Just an overall festive look.
